San Pedro Bay Ports Dwell Times for Month of March Remain Similar to February Levels

March 2024

Through the month of March cargo traveling through the San Pedro Bay Port complex experienced dwell times which remained relatively steady in a month-to-month comparison with February’s averages.   Container truck dwell spent an average of 2.59 days at port terminals in March and rail cargo dwell time was an average of 7.02 days at terminals.

For trucking cargo, the March figure is within the normal range, suggesting efficient movement of cargo at this stage. For rail-destined cargo, the March dwell times remained consistent with February, which was higher than the normal range.

One factor contributing to the higher than historical average dwell time for rail-bound containers is the proportion of containers that dwell for five or more days.
