As the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach experienced strong cargo volumes in December to cap off a year with record-high volumes, dwell time data indicated more efficient cargo movement through the marine terminals this past month. Dwell time for rail-destined containers in December improved compared to November and experienced a 34% drop since their peak-season high. Truck-destined container dwell times for December remained steady.
Cargo moving through the San Pedro Bay Port Complex via truck spent an average of 3.11 days at port terminals in December, consistent with November’s 3.10 days. Rail-destined cargo dwell time fell to 6.53 days from 7.67 days in the previous month and a high of 9.86 days in October.
“The significant improvement of rail-bound cargo operations and consistently low truck dwell times in December highlight the marine terminals' dedication to ensure the nation’s goods keep moving smoothly through the supply chain during this year’s record-setting peak season,” said Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA).
