Through the month of September, cargo traveling through the San Pedro Bay ports destined for local delivery via truck spent an average of 3 days at marine terminals. The September figures saw a slight increase from August’s average of 2.89 days. The September truck dwell time is within the normal range.

Dwell time for rail-destined cargo increased in September with cargo spending an average of 6.54 days at terminals, compared to 4.45 days during the previous month.

A factor contributing to the average dwell time for local and rail-bound containers is the proportion of containers that dwell for five or more days. In September, 7.3% of local containers dwelled for more than five days; 50.5% of rail-bound containers dwelled for five or more days.

"In September, there has been an increase in rail cargo dwell time while the truck cargo dwell time has remained steady from month-to-month," stated Michele Grubbs, Vice President of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA). " As we approach the holiday season, our terminal operators remain committed to ensure the efficient goods flow of container traffic through our marine terminals."
