As cargo volumes at the San Pedro Bay ports remained elevated, October saw continued growth in demand for intermodal container equipment and space at marine terminals at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Rail-destined container dwell time exceeded September’s figures, but grew at the slowest monthly rate since the upward trajectory in rail dwell times this peak shipping season began in June. Truck-destined container dwell times remained at roughly the same level observed through September. These levels reflect ongoing pressures on the logistics system as it copes with sustained US West Coast demand.
Cargo moving through the San Pedro Bay Port Complex via truck spent an average of 3.16 days at port terminals in October, slightly lower than September 2024 but slightly higher the October 2023 peak season high of 2.78 days. Rail-destined cargo dwell time rose to 9.86 days, adding an additional half-day to the September high. These figures reflect the high growth in intermodal cargo destined for the US West Coast in the second half of this year.
“The continued upward trajectory in dwell times through October underscores both the complexity and adaptability of our supply chain as we manage increased cargo volumes and try to balance intermodal equipment availability with demand,” said Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA). “Our marine terminals continue to work diligently to balance capacity and maintain fluidity, providing supply chain system resilience, and ensuring that the nation’s goods keep moving.”
