Local container dwell time at San Pedro ports was down for the month of February, mirroring a decline in overall cargo volumes. Dwell time for local cargo leaving the marine terminal by truck averaged 2.9 days in February, down from 3.2 days in January. Additionally, 7.9% of containers exceeded five or more days at terminals before departing for their destinations, down from 9.8% the month before.

Rail-bound cargo did not follow the same trend. During the month of February, containers moving by rail remained on marine terminals for an average of 5.8 days, up from 4.3 days the month before.

“Despite the slight increase in dwell time for rail-bound cargo, dwell is down from a peak of 16.5 days in August of 2022,” stated Michele Grubbs, Vice President of PMSA. “Cargo is moving and there is space on terminals to move more.”
