Reflecting continued significant increases in volumes at the San Pedro Bay ports, including a nearly 50% jump in year-over-year imported containers in July, truck and rail dwell times for containers through the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach hit year-to-date highs.

Cargo traveling through the San Pedro Bay Port Complex via truck spent an average of 2.95 days at port terminals in August, the highest since 3.21 days was recorded during peak season 2023 and slightly higher than August 2023. The average rail-destined cargo dwell time for August was 8.20 days, compared to the 2023 peak season high of 6.54 days.

"In August, the increases in dwell times reflect the need for ongoing coordination and resilience amongst our logistics partners, as cargo volumes surge and remain high,” stated Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA).  “The marine terminals at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are facilitating smooth operations and have done a good job of balancing equipment supply and demand in the face of significant year-over-year surges in cargo.”
