Dear Friend:
Welcome to the latest edition of the Indirect Source Rule newsletter.
Over 200 Organizations Nationwide Oppose Port ISR, Support Investment in Clean Air Infrastructure
Our coalition of over 200 labor, business, and agricultural organizations sent a strong message to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson to oppose the SCAQMD’s proposed Ports Indirect Source Rule (ISR). Instead, the coalition asked the Mayors to lead the way to more investment in the infrastructure necessary to support the Ports' transition to cleaner operations. The Port ISR would reduce cargo capacity and harm port workers, terminal operators, and industries. Caps on emissions would hurt the Southern California and national economies and delay the Ports' investments in zero-emission infrastructure. Unprecedented Improvements in Air Quality at Ports of LA, Long Beach
The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have released their respective annual 2023 Emissions Inventory Reports- demonstrating, once again, the Ports’ global leadership in environmental sustainability. The reports highlight the tremendous strides made in reducing air pollution from cargo operations, with significant emissions reductions across the board as port activity returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Combined key achievements since 2005 include:
A 91% reduction in diesel particulates
A 72% reduction in nitrogen oxides
A 98% reduction in sulfur oxides
A 20% reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs)
The results of both emissions inventory reports demonstrate that the San Pedro Bay is fully capable of achieving significant emissions reductions without the need for overbearing regulations. The proposed Ports ISR would divert cargo to dirtier ports, unfairly punishing the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach—two ports that are currently leading the world environmental sustainability.
Let’s Get Social:
It’s important that your social networks understand the negative impact than a Port ISR would have on your business and/or industry. Please find below a sample post that we would ask you to share on your social media platforms. Remember to use the #NoCargoCap and #NoPortsISR hashtags so we can track all published posts.
Over 200 organizations have united to urge @MayorOfLA and @LongBeachMayor to oppose the proposed Ports ISR. This rule threatens jobs, caps cargo, and shifts business to dirtier ports! Let's invest in zero-emission infrastructure instead. #NoPortsISR #NoCargoCap
