Not Farewell, But Thanks

By John McLaurin, President, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association

The Port of Oakland recently announced the retirement of Executive Director Chris Lytle, a figure of respect and significant impact within the trade community. His departure marks the end of an era for the Port, which has undergone notable transformation under his leadership.

When Lytle took over in July 2013, the Port was in turmoil, facing media scrutiny, labor disruptions, and a poor reputation. During his tenure, he brought stability, improved relationships among supply chain partners, and transformed the Port’s reputation. Cargo volumes increased, and the Port became known for innovative efforts rather than disruption.

As Lytle transitions to a consulting role, the trade community recognizes his contributions and expresses gratitude for his leadership. Although it is not yet time to say goodbye, it is appropriate to acknowledge and thank him for his positive impact on the Port and the industry.
